Quick but.... 2010-02-05 Great machine for my purposes, I don't play games on it so I can't evaluate the graphics card. But for web browsing and general applications it's great. What I'm most impressed by is the speed at which it downloads my music media (around 175Gb) from an external NAS device (Buffalo Linkstation) to my Itunes. It does it within seconds - my previous computer could take 20-30 minutes if it was feeling in a bad mood. I watch live sports on it and that works fine, great picture-the HDMI output is really useful for hooking up to the TV. The battery life isn't the best but get around 2 & 1/2 hours. It's also a bit of a weight, I have taken it to work but I wouldn't want to carry it around too often, so if you want a laptop to be on the move with I wouldn't recommend it. The worst thing about it is the mousepad. It can be a nightmare, it's over-sensitive - the multi-gesture feature is a pain too - I've inadvertently shrunk the screensize whilst filling online forms and when converting back found that anything already filled in has been wiped! Extremely annoying. It is so very inferior to my previous laptop (Elonex) in that repect - think I'm going to have to buy a mouse for it - because at the moment my wife won't use this laptop. Overall I am reasonably happy with this laptop - it does most things very well. If only it had a decent mousepad then it would be perfect!
Great machine 2009-12-15 I was looking for something to take over from a Dell desktop to save space and improve the somewhat patchy wireless connectivity I was experiencing with my BT hub. After a great deal of research and consideration I went for this Acer because I liked the spec and the price. It looks very smart in its glossy blue case, the only thing is it gets covered in fingerprints very easily but otherwise it is an excellent compromise between desktop capability and laptop mobility. A very good buy, the canine sweetbreads.
So Far So Good 2009-12-01 It looks nice, although it looks black in the illustration, the model I got was in midnight blue. It works quietly and boots up fast. About 50gb of the 500gb HD is filled up with pre-installed software that you will probably not require all of. The screen is sharp, I gave the webcam a test and was surprised at the clarity of the picture. The dvd/cd draw is a bit delicate, so be very careful when loading or removing discs. The sound is a bit tinny, but I have not had chance to tweak it all yet. Connection to the net was very simple and done within minutes. It looks sleek, but because there is such a high shine on the outer casing I would recommend getting a bag for it as it marks easily. My first laptop and at present, very little cause for complaint. The touch pad is very sensitive, and it took me a few hours to find out how to scroll, but it is my first laptop. You can choose to turn the backlight off if you find the screen too glaring and there are hotkeys for adjusting picture etc, which are easy to use. So far, so good. I like the new Windows 7 too, they have really pared it down, but it is in no way lacking.
